What You Need to Bring
Your Renewal Notice
That letter the DMV sent you. It has all the info we need – your license plate, VIN, fees owed, etc.
If You Don’t Have Your Renewal Notice
No problem. Bring any of these:
- Your current registration card
- Your license plate number
- Your VIN
We can look up your vehicle and process the renewal.
Proof of Insurance
California requires insurance to register your vehicle. If you don’t have insurance yet or need to update it, we’ll take care of that first.
Payment
Cash, credit card, or debit card. We’ll tell you the total before processing anything.
Smog Certificate (If Required)
Check your renewal notice. If it says you need a smog check, get that done first and bring the certificate. We can’t process your renewal without it.
How Much Does It Cost?
DMV Registration Fees
This varies based on your vehicle – type, value, weight, etc. Your renewal notice shows exactly what you owe. Most vehicles are $100-300/year.
Our Service Fee
We charge a small service fee (usually $15-25) to process your renewal. Way worth it to avoid the DMV hassle.
Late Fees
If your registration already expired, there are penalties. The longer you wait, the more it costs. Get it done ASAP to avoid extra fees.
We’ll break down all the costs before you pay so there are no surprises.
Registration Expired? Don’t Panic
Get It Done ASAP
Driving with expired registration can get you a ticket – usually $250 or more. Plus late fees add up fast.
How Long Has It Been Expired?
- Less than 1 month: Small late fee
- 1-2 months: Bigger late fee
- 2+ months: Even bigger late fee plus possible penalties
Don’t wait any longer. Come in today and we’ll get you legal again.
Can You Still Drive?
Technically no, but we get it – life happens. Once we process your renewal, you’ll have temporary registration so you can drive legally while waiting for your stickers.
When to Renew
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
You can renew up to 60 days before your expiration date. We recommend doing it at least 2 weeks early to avoid any issues.
Check Your Expiration Date
Look at your registration sticker on your license plate or check your registration card. Don’t guess – expired registration tickets are expensive.
Set a Reminder
Registration is usually due on the same date every year. Put it in your phone calendar so you don’t forget next year.
Do You Need a Smog Check?
Most Vehicles Need One Every 2 Years
If your renewal notice says “smog required,” you need to get that done before we can process your renewal.
Who Doesn’t Need Smog?
- Vehicles 8 years old or newer
- Diesels 1997 or older
- Electric vehicles
- Motorcycles
- Certain other exemptions
Check your renewal notice – it’ll tell you if you need smog or not.
Where to Get Smog
Any licensed smog station in California. Takes about 30 minutes and costs $30-80 depending on the station. Once you have the certificate, bring it to us and we’ll handle the rest.
Common Questions
How long does the renewal process take?
Usually 15-30 minutes. Walk in, hand us your paperwork and payment, we process it, and you’re done.
Do I get my stickers right away?
You’ll get temporary registration same day. Your official stickers come in the mail from the DMV within 7-10 days.
What if I lost my renewal notice?
No problem. We can look up your vehicle info and process the renewal anyway. Just bring your license plate number or VIN.
Can I renew if I have unpaid tickets?
Usually no. Unpaid tickets block your registration. We can check if you have any holds and tell you what needs to be paid first.
What if my address changed?
Let us know and we’ll update it as part of the renewal. Make sure your insurance has the right address too.
Do I need to bring my car?
Nope! Just bring the paperwork and payment. Your car can stay at home.
Can someone else renew my registration for me?
Yes, as long as they bring all the required documents and payment.
Out of State Vehicle?
Moving to California?
If you just moved here from another state, you have 20 days to register your vehicle in California. It’s a different process than a renewal – you’ll need a VIN verification, smog check, and title transfer.
We handle out-of-state registrations too. Give us a call and we’ll tell you what you need.
Commercial Vehicles
Work Trucks and Commercial Vehicles
We handle those too! Requirements are a bit different for commercial registration. Call us and we’ll walk you through what you need.
Multiple Vehicles?
Got More Than One Car?
Bring all your renewal notices and we’ll handle them all at once. Easier than making multiple trips.
Fleet Vehicles
If you’ve got a business with multiple vehicles, we can help with fleet registration. Call us to discuss what you need.
After Your Renewal
Temporary Registration
We’ll give you a temporary registration document. Keep it in your car until your stickers arrive.
When Stickers Arrive
You’ll get them in the mail from the DMV within 7-10 days. Put the stickers on your license plate right away.
Where Do Stickers Go?
The month sticker goes on top, year sticker goes on bottom, on the back license plate. Make sure the plate is clean so they stick properly.
Keep Your Registration Card in the Car
Put it in your glove box. Cops can ask to see it, and you’ll need it if you get pulled over.
What If You Sell Your Car?
Don’t Renew If You’re Selling
If you’re about to sell your car, don’t bother renewing. Let the new owner handle it.
Already Renewed and Then Sold?
Registration transfers with the car. The new owner benefits from your renewed registration.
File Release of Liability
When you sell, file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability so you’re not responsible if the new owner doesn’t register it or gets tickets. We can do that for you.
Need Insurance Too?
No Insurance? No Problem
California requires insurance to register your vehicle. If you don’t have it or yours expired, we’ll get you insured first (takes 10-15 minutes), then handle your registration right after.
One Stop, Everything Done
That’s the beauty of working with us. Insurance and registration all in one visit. No running around to different places.
