Clean, correct ownership changes – without a DMV line
Sold a car, bought from a private seller, gifting to family – we prep the forms, fix signature issues, calculate fees and taxes, and submit to DMV systems so you do not burn a day at a window. Most clean cases submit same day. Plates and the printed title arrive by mail from DMV.
What we handle
Standard private sales
- Seller signs the California title – buyer signs and we submit
- Smog and odometer rules checked up front
- Penalties calculated if you waited too long
Family, gift, and estate
- Parent to child, spouses, grandparents, etc.
- Statement of Facts and any affidavits
- Guidance on when smog is not required for immediate family
Lien and payoff
- Add or remove a lienholder after payoff
- Paper or electronic lien releases processed
Corrections and cleanups
- Name change, spelling errors, mileage mistakes
- Lost title or never-received title – duplicate title and transfer in one go
If your paperwork is messy – missing bill of sale, title not signed, seller unreachable – we map the fastest legal fix.
What to bring
- Government ID

Smog and odometer – the rules that trip people up
Smog for change of ownership
- In a private sale, the seller must provide a valid smog check. If the car is less than 4 model years old, the buyer pays a smog transfer fee instead of getting a test. (California DMV)
- For private-party purchases, BAR says the car must have passed a Smog Check within the last 90 days. Ask for the inspection report. (Bureau of Automotive Repair)
- Immediate family gifts usually do not require a smog check, with narrow exceptions spelled out by DMV. We confirm which rule fits your case. (California DMV)
Odometer disclosure
- Federal rules now require odometer disclosure up to 20 years for model year 2011 and newer vehicles. Plan to record mileage on the proper form. (NHTSA)
Timelines you should know
- Buyer – DMV expects the title transfer to be completed and fees paid within 10 days of the sale or change. (California DMV)
- Seller – file the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within 5 days so DMV knows you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. We can guide you through the online NRL. (California DMV)
Forms we prep and explain
- REG 227 – Application for Duplicate or Transfer of Title – used when the title is lost or damaged and to transfer at the same time. (California DMV)
- REG 262 – Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment – used for secure odometer disclosure or multiple reassignments; DMV must mail or provide it due to security paper. (California DMV)
- REG 256 – Statement of Facts – for family transfers, corrections, or clarifications. (California DMV)
You do not need to memorize any of this – we fill what is needed and tell you why.
Common California scenarios we fix fast
- Title signed wrong – missing seller signature, wrong date, mileage boxed incorrectly
- Lost title – we run REG 227 to replace and transfer in one packet
- Loan just paid off – lienholder still on title – we collect the release and clear it
- Gift to family – show the right relationship and handle smog exceptions
- Estate or inheritance – affidavits and limits checked before you stand in a line
- Late transfer – penalties calculated and minimized under DMV rules
FAQ
Do I need a smog if the seller just smogged it
Yes, but you can use a certificate that is still within its valid window. BAR states private-party purchases need a Smog Check within the last 90 days. (Bureau of Automotive Repair)
What if the title is missing
We use REG 227 to request a duplicate and complete the transfer in one packet. (California DMV)
Where do I get the odometer form
Secure odometer disclosures use REG 262, which DMV provides or mails due to security features. We arrange it for you. (California DMV)
How fast is all this
We prepare and submit the transfer the same day for clean cases. DMV prints and mails titles on their timetable.
What happens if I forget to file the seller notice
File the NRL online within 5 days so DMV shows the change and you are not tied to tickets or civil issues after the sale. (California DMV)
