Tell DMV you sold the vehicle so you are not on the hook
Sold a car and handed over the keys – the last step is filing the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. It tells DMV that you are no longer responsible for tickets, tolls, or civil issues after the sale date. We file it cleanly so your record shows the change.
We serve sellers across California from our El Cajon office.
What we handle
- File the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability for your sale
- Correct sales dates and buyer info when you made a typo
- Paper or online submission based on what your case needs
- Address fixes so future DMV mail stops coming to you for that vehicle
- Pair the NRL with your title transfer packet if you still have paperwork to finish
Why this matters
- Protects you from post-sale tickets and tolls
- Confirms to DMV that you are not the legal possessor after the sale date
- Helps prevent renewal notices and collections from landing on you
- Does not transfer ownership by itself – the buyer still must complete the title transfer
When to file
- Within 5 days of the sale, gift, or release
- File as soon as possible if you forgot – late is better than not at all
- File a new NRL if the first one had an error on sale date or buyer info
What you need to file
- Your driver license or ID
- License plate number and last 5 of the VIN
- Date of sale and time if you know it
- Buyer’s full name and address
- Odometer reading for newer vehicles if available
- Your contact info in case DMV needs clarification
If you do not have every detail, bring what you have. We will map the cleanest way to file.
How it works in our office
- Quick intake – who bought it, when, and which vehicle
- Record pull – confirm VIN, plate, title status, and any open flags
- Prepare the NRL – clean, complete, with the correct sale date
- Submit – online or paper filing depending on the record
- Wrap up – we give you proof of submission and what to keep for your records
Common California scenarios we clean up
- Private party sale – seller kept a copy of the title – we file NRL and show what the buyer still needs
- Buyer delayed transfer – tickets started coming – we file NRL with the correct date and guide next steps
- Gift to family – we file NRL and pair it with the family transfer forms
- Trade in at a dealer – dealer handles transfer later – we still file NRL to timestamp your release
- Lost buyer address – we document what you know and file to protect your date of sale
FAQ
Does this transfer the title
No. NRL only notifies DMV you released the vehicle. The buyer must complete the title transfer and pay fees.
What if I do not know the buyer’s full address
Provide as much as you have. We will still file to document your sale date and reduce exposure.
I sold the car months ago and forgot
File now. We will use the actual sale date and attach notes if needed.
Will this stop renewal notices
It helps. Notices should shift once DMV processes the buyer’s transfer. If they do not, bring them in and we will check the record.
What if the buyer never transfers
Your NRL on file is your protection for events after the sale date. We can also advise on next steps if mail keeps coming.
